World Press Freedom Day 2026: Amplifying Youth Voices for Media Freedom in Tanzania

ELIMIKA WIKIENDI played a central role in the World Press Freedom Day 2026 commemorations held in Arusha, Tanzania, from 28–30 April, 2026. The event brought together over 600 participants under the theme “Shaping a Future at Peace: Promoting Press Freedom for Human Rights, Development and Security."

ELIMIKA WIKIENDI focused its engagement on strengthening youth participation in the digital creative economy and positioning young content creators within policy and industry discussions shaping the future of the digital creative industry and safer digital spaces.
The organization joined the opening #PressForProgress Fun Run alongside journalists and media stakeholders, reinforcing growing youth visibility in press freedom advocacy spaces.

A key intervention was the breakaway session “Empowering the Digital Creative Economy: Content Creators,ˮ hosted by UNESCO Tanzania in partnership with the Ministry of Information, Culture, Arts and Sports. The session brought together more than 100 youth influencers and content creators and around 250 participants in total, including industry experts and regulators from TCRA. Speakers included Mr. James Massawe, the Executive Director of Elimika Wikiendi, Mr. John Izoba, CEO of Safari Podcast and Eng. Kadaya Baluhye, Director of Broadcasting Services, TCRA. The discussion focused on monetisation, personal branding, digital safety and navigating regulation in the digital creative economy.

ELIMIKA WIKIENDI also contributed to national policy dialogue that produced 15 media reform recommendations presented to the Minister of Information, Arts, Culture and Sports, Hon. Paul Makonda. The proposals reflected youth priorities on media freedom, content creation, digital safety and protection, media law reform and emerging technologies in journalism including artificial intelligence

Across the forum, Elimika Wikiendi engaged with UNESCO, government institutions, regulators and media stakeholders, strengthening its position as a youth-focused organization linking digital safety, creative economy participation and policy engagement. Around 50 young creators directly benefited from practical exposure to monetisation strategies, branding and professional media networks.

The #WPFD2026 discussions highlighted wider shifts in the digital media sector, including the rise of influencers,digital creators,economic pressure on traditional journalism, media viability and localization. It also pointed to emerging opportunities in tourism and cultural storytelling.
ELIMIKAWIKIENDIʼs participation reflected a clear shift, youth-led organizations are no longer peripheral actors but active contributors to media freedom, policy direction and democratic dialogue, while also strengthening strategic partnerships with the Government and UNESCO in advancing youth participation and media development in Tanzania.
