Addressing Sexual and Reproductive Health Myths and Misconceptions Among Young People Through Digital Technology

The ELIMIKA Programme is a youth focused initiative designed to address myths and misconceptions surrounding Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) among young people in Tanzania by promoting information integrity through digital technology. The programme recognizes that young people increasingly rely on digital platforms and online spaces as primary sources of information. While these technologies create opportunities for learning and engagement, they also contribute to the rapid spread of misinformation and disinformation related to sexual and reproductive health. ELIMIKA seeks to harness the power of digital technology to ensure young people have access to timely and trusted information that enables them to make informed choices about their health and wellbeing.

Why it matters?
Young people (aged 15-35) represent 34.7% of Tanzania population continue to face major sexual and reproductive health challenges. Despite progress in health and digital development, myths and misconceptions related to sexual and reproductive health continue to influence behaviors, limit access to services and negatively affect health outcomes among youth. Young people still experience barriers to accessing trusted information due to cultural norms, stigma and limited open discussions around sexual and reproductive health. In many communities, conversations around sexuality remain sensitive, causing youth to rely on peers, social media, and other unverified sources where inaccurate information may circulate widely. Misconceptions about family planning, menstruation, sexually transmitted infections, HIV prevention, and gender related issues continue to shape perceptions and influence decisions among young people.

Building on the experience of #ElimikaWikiendi
Since 2016, Elimika Wikiendi has implemented youth focused digital platform designed to facilitate dialogue on issues affecting young people, including sexual and reproductive health. Through weekly #ElimikaWikiendi digital dialogues and social media engagement, the platform has reached and engaged millions of young people across Tanzania. These discussions have created opportunities for youth to interact with experts and discuss topics considered sensitive within schools, communities, and families. The platform has become a trusted space where young people seek information and guidance on contraception, HIV prevention, sexually transmitted infections, menstrual health and hygiene, gender-based violence, and other sexual and reproductive health concerns. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the platform played an important role in addressing myths and misconceptions related to COVID-19 vaccines by supporting evidence-based discussions and promoting accurate public health information.

Our Vision
We envision a generation of informed, empowered and digitally connected young people in Tanzania who confidently access accurate, youth-friendly sexual and reproductive health information while challenging harmful myths and misconceptions within their communities and on digital spaces.

Elimika Wikiendi established to build a more informed generation of youth in Tanzania and strengthen youth participation in the development agendas.
